Performance/ installation/ soundscape, collaboration with Sarah Fayyad 2019, between NL and Syria.

“The nails are the hairs growing on my soft skin The nails are a group, the wall is one
The nails are attacking the wall
The nails are supporting the wall

They are a war scene
They are an instrument played by god, the culprit
When every single nail gets hammered in the
wall, it’s painful, when all nails are in the
wall, it’s comfortable, relaxing, and pleasing
When each nail starts to get out of the wall
it’s painful, when all are out, it’s comfortable, relaxing and pleasing”

How does a person define a space as theirs? Is it by hammering a painting or a photo on the wall? What if the mere act of hammering a nail on a wall is an act of defining a space as yours. In this performance/installation/sound work, I hammer 5 kg of nails on the wall of my studio, to discover the poetics, the sounds, and the movement of being stuck in a meditative, aggressive experience.
During this performance which took 5 days, a friend of mine who was a political prisoner in Syria went out of prison, she told me that during her time in prison, she either got tortured or dreamt of being tortured by being forced to hammer the walls of her sell until she feels home in it. She wrote a poem while hammaring and gave it to me to attach to my hammered wall, and since our conversation, I consider this work as a collaboration with Sarah.
