Spiritual sounds from Sufi rituals (that are holy and elevating), and Egyptian pop songs (that are considered to be cheesy, superficial and frivolous), they both share the same origin and contain very similar elements, the physical movements, the rhythms, the words, lyrics, and the need to lose oneself in trance. When slowing down the Egyptian pop songs, they sound exactly like Sufi rituals, with their melodies and rhythms.
I perform a Hadra ritual, a combination of frivolousness and spirituality which are never separate, mixing the sounds of the slowed-down pop songs, with sounds of Hadras and Shia rituals, surrounded by video screens showing people performing movements that are usually performed in the rituals or pop songs video clips, the videos are played in slow motion on old TV screens.
Each time this performance happen is a unique Hadra as it is based on live improvisation of mixed sounds.
